Civil Infrastructure Systems (CIS) Engineering Education: A Target of Opportunity

Author: John H. Grubbs

"It is time to ‘pay the piper’ for the decades of neglect we have inflicted upon our national infrastructure. This paper paints a picture of specific challenges facing our major cities in terms of civil infrastructure systems. Linkages are then made to existing opportunities in engineering education programs which can serve to not only mitigate the effects of our crumbling infrastructure, but to produce engineering graduates with more than the pure ‘technical savvy’ related to engineering. A prototype infrastructure curriculum is presented. The modular nature of the model provides a strong engineering component while allowing the student to view the infrastructure challenge from other perspectives as well."
