Laura Steinberg

Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Southern Methodist University

Laura J. Steinberg is an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Tulane University. Before attending graduate school, Dr. Steinberg worked for Louis Berger International of East Orange, New Jersey holding positions as Engineer/Planner, Senior Engineer, and Environmental Engineering Department Head. In these capacities, she worked on a variety of projects including the Environmental Impact Statement for the MX Missile and the design of a new 30,000-person U.S. airbase in the Middle East. After a year-long stint in the MBA program at the University of Chicago, during which she worked with Lester B. Knight and Associates on planning for the Superconducting Super Collider, she returned to the New York area as Business Development Manager for the environmental engineering firm Geraghty and Miller, Inc. Following a post-doctoral appointment at the National Institute of Statistical Science during which she studied environmental justice and urban air pollution, Dr. Steinberg joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Tulane University. There, her research has focused on natural hazards management, water quality modeling, and environmental technology diffusion within the wastewater industry. Dr. Steinberg is the chair of the Water Resources/Environmental Engineering Committee of the New Orleans American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), a member of the ASCE National Water Policy Board and the Water Environment Federation's Disinfection Committee, and a former member of the Chapel Hill, NC Planning Board. Education: B.S.E. in Civil and Urban Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Duke University.
